The King of Straps: Introducing Rembordé

Site

The most common variety of strap is the cut edge where the strap leather gets cut to size either in a press or, as here at Atelier D. James, by hand with a knife. The edge then gets burnished or painted.

On a Rembordé strap the top layer of leather gets wrapped around a natural cotton fleece and folded over the edge, before being glued down into the lining leather. The name Rembordé comes from French and literally translates to folded edge or overflow.

When it requires the leather to be skived incredibly thin, any type of leather can be used, such as hornback crocodile, which would be too stiff for conventional techniques.

A Rembordé strap, which is also known as a Full-bugg, can be stitched or unstitched depending on preference. It is soft as well as durable, and is considered to be the most luxurious way of finishing an edge in strap making.

We make Rembordé straps on request. Please contact us for a quote.
